Pitcher Sampler

We offer a Pitcher Sampler to collect soil samples for geotechnical analyses. The pitcher sampler is used for soil that is too hard for a shelby tube alone.
This sampler is a double-walled soil sampler. The outer barrel is thick steel. The inner barrel is a standard 3-inch diameter by 3-foot long shelby tube. The inner barrel is spring loaded so it extends or retracts relative to the outer barrel according to soil stiffness. In softer soil, the inner barrel extends out below the outer barrel. In harder soil, the inner barrel retracts inside of the outer barrel.
A high tension spring is located inside the outer barrel and above the inner barrel.
The sampler can be used with 6.25-inch hollow stem auger or the mud rotary drilling method.
When used with the mud rotary method, a sliding valve allows drilling fluid to flow through the inner barrel to flush debris from the sampler before it is seated on the bottom of the hole. Once the sampler is pushed into the bottom of the hole, the flow is diverted to the outside of the outer barrel. The valve allows circulation of drilling fluid in the annulus between the sampler and the bore hole to remove cuttings and maintain the hole during sampling.
